Is it better to ship by LCL or FCL?

Are you wondering whether to ship FCL or LCL? Here are some pointers to help you decide.

Is it better to ship freight by FCL (full container load) or LCL (less than container load)? Here are some factors to consider:

LCL lets you keep inventory low

Having an LCL delivery lets you keep your inventory lean by shipping in smaller volumes. You can save money and space by opting for LCL rather than a full container at your warehouse. You can keep inventory flowing through your warehouse in smaller quantities by using LCL rather than purchasing large amounts from your suppliers.

It may be cheaper to ship FCL than LCL

LCL charges more than FCL for each item. Full container loads are preferred by freight agents because they are simpler to handle than bundling many LCL shipments into a full container. The cost of a large LCL shipment is equivalent to the price of a 20-foot container, and this depends on where you are sending your goods and the state of the ocean freight economy

Making delivery appointments is made easier with LCL

Many destinations (including Amazon FBA centres) require delivery appointments. Because an FCL shipment must be picked up, delivered, and returned to the port within about eight days (before you start incurring demurrage and/ or per diem charges) – you may not be able to arrange a delivery appointment within that time – this may prove difficult. However, with an LCL shipment, you have more time; usually, five days at the port and then seven or more days at the deconsolidation warehouse. Because of this, you are more likely to secure a delivery appointment before fees take effect.

FCL deliveries are faster than LCL ones

An FCL shipment is unloaded from the vessel and delivered to the buyer when it arrives at the port. LCL shipments, on the other hand, require additional work: consolidating different shipments, processing multiple documents per container, and then sorting goods for each customer. Every step is a potential source of delay.
